Debt Settlement Companies

If you want to get out of debt in the fastest way possible, you might want to see what debt settlement companies can do for you.

Advantages of Debt Settlement Companies

When you're looking for a way out of debt, you might want to check out debt settlement companies. Most debt settlement companies offer debt settlement programs that enable you to pay off your unsecured debts at 30-60 cents on the dollar. Imagine having $10,000 worth of unsecured debt and the ability to access $5,000. You might think, "If only my creditors would just let me pay $5,000 and consider my debt paid." Well, a debt settlement program can make it happen. Here's how....

First, you sift through a number of debt settlement companies to find one you trust. You want to make sure they are nationally certified and accredited, make sure your creditors will work with them, and make sure they are willing to answer any questions you might have about their program. Bottom line, choose a debt settlement company you're comfortable with that has a proven track record of success with other consumers.

Once you've made your choice, a debt settlement professional will contact your creditors to negotiate with them for the big reductions. They'll probably tell your creditors how much money you have access to and see what kind of deal they can work out.

The Downside

Generally, as a condition of making these reductions, you will be required to pay the new, lower amounts immediately. But some debt settlement services will give you 1-3 years to pay it off. Another downside is that debt settlement does leave a slight "blip" on your credit report that's equivalent to a few late payments. But if you think you can live with that, and you have access to a large sum of cash, and you want to get out of debt in a hurry, debt settlement could be just the thing for you.
